An Anatomy Lesson: Scale Models
Scale Models Include: simple 2-D sketches to complex 3-D exhibits made of wood, metal, or plastic
Advantages to You: makes blueprints, technical drawings come alive; holds juror's interest; promotes understanding
Creating Models: start early; verify needed data (blueprints, photos etc); make changes as needed; practice before using model; must be lightweight; big enough to be seen by all; place model in front of a jury as long as possible
Admissibility: model needs to be fair and very accurate
Using a Model: during discovery depositions, mediation, ADR, settlement and in court
Models require more research time than conventional exhibits. Acquiring or rounding up photographs, measurements, police and accident reports, engineering drawings or blueprints adds to the accuracy and admissibility of 3-D scale model exhibits. Models cannot be ignored. They are powerful tools which draw and keep attention through out depositions or trial.
